Most people know Mirjam Widmer, who was born in Zurich, by the name "Mü". Photography has accompanied her since her youth. The camera was always with her. This was also the case when she discovered her passion for caving in 2004.

 

On international trips and expeditions, Mirjam Widmer has expanded her photographic knowledge together with cave photographers from around the world. Over the years, she has developed her own style – “rich and refined, with a touch of feminine class” (Roberto Buzzini).

 

In 2026, she completed her diploma in Communication Design HF, specialising in Photography, at the Higher Technical School of Photography at Zentrum Bildung in Baden, Switzerland. The qualification is recognised as a Professional Bachelor. She received the “zB. best of” award for her final diploma result.

The image is created in the mind first: Nothing in a cave is permanently lit. The cave becomes bright for only about one thousandth of a second. To bring light into the darkness, the trained chemical laboratory technician works with up to six flashes at the same time, depending on the situation.

 

Through her photography, Mirjam Widmer makes the treasures of the underground world visible – its unique shapes and the interplay of light and shadow – even for people who do not explore caves themselves.
